WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: Poplarville RB Zac Owen

Over the last four seasons Poplarville High School has a combined record of 46-10 with now four straight appearances in the South State championship.

In a year riddled by injuries, one Hornets fullback has stepped up in big way.

If you’re Poplarville Fullback Zac Owen then you’ve already been a part of 17 playoff games in your playing career, that’s almost two full regular season’s worth. Has the magnitude of November football been lost on him at all? “I kind of like to split my season up in three ways: non-district, district, and then playoffs. It’s do or die in the playoffs. You got to go out and bring everything you got.”

That proved true in last week’s big victory over the previously undefeated South Pike Eagles. Owen ran wild, rushing 23 times for 138 yards and four touchdowns in what some considered the upset of the week. “I knew it was going to be tough. I knew we had to run hard and my guys, they blocked for me great. I had to do my part and run hard and I got the job done.”

Despite the Hornets postseason success, this season has been more of a bumpy ride. Poplarville has been riddled with injuries all year, including most notably senior running back Chases Shears, who could arguably be viewed as the centerpiece of their offense. “It’s very unfortunate. Chase is a very talented running back and he’s had some unfortunate injuries that have kind of held him up a little bit. So, we’ve all had to step up, all the backs, and everybody on offense.”

Owen and the Hornets offense will look to stay hot this Friday night when they host Lawrence County for not only a South State Championship, but the opportunity to play in the 4A State Championship Game December 7th in Hattiesburg.
