WXXV Stories From 2023: January through April
As the year comes to a close, WXXV wants to look back at some of the biggest stories from each month.
JANUARY 11, 2023 – Jackson County School Board votes to not renew superintendent’s contract
Starting out in January – Dr. John Strycker was voted out as the superintendent of the Jackson County School District.
The decision came during a school board meeting on January 9, with Dr. Strycker completing his term at the end of June.
FEBRUARY 6, 2023 – Uber driver shot in Harrison County shares her story
In February, an Uber driver on the Gulf Coast shared her story with WXXV after being shot in the head while picking up a fare.
Linda Buford was working as an Uber driver after COVID caused her to struggle financially.
Buford was shot in the face when she dropped off her fare and called the police – being flown to a New Orleans hospital.
MARCH 6, 2023 – Long Beach residents put together petition to save oak tree
Happening in March, Long Beach residents tried to oppose a 200-year-old live oak tree from being cut down.
The tree survived Hurricanes Camille and Katrina, with some residents wanting it to be treated like a historic landmark.
Residents even went to an alderman meeting to fight for the tree, but sadly the 200-year-old tree was cut down in April.
APRIL 17, 2023 – Biloxi officer among injured during shooting at Black Spring Break
A Biloxi officer was among those injured during a shooting that happened over Black Spring Break.
That officer was responding to reports of gunfire when he was hit and taken of Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Others were injured – some being life threatening injuries – and this caused the City of Biloxi to change several ordinances to keep events from getting out of hand.
