WXXV Game of the Week Preview: Clash of unbeatens between Picayune at West Jones
For a team that hasn’t played a one-possession game since September 13th, it’s crazy to think that undefeated Picayune is now coming off back-to-back-to-back come from behind victories leading up to its second straight 5A South State championship game appearance.
It’s a familiar foe waiting on the other side of the bracket in West Jones presenting a rematch from last year’s semi-final showdown.
Not a lot has changed from then to now minus the fact that both teams might have actually gotten better. The Maroon Tide and home team Mustangs have been on a crash course all season long with both programs sitting on perfect 13-0 records heading into this Thanksgiving week affair.
That means West Jones is going to have to take its first loss to keep the storybook ending alive for long-time Picayune Head Coach Dodd Lee. “I guess in the back of my head I thought this might happen, but football is a crazy game. We could have gotten beat last week. We could have gotten beat the two weeks before that. I mean there’s a lot of good coaches in this state and a lot of good programs and we’re just glad for our opportunity and I hope we get it. But we’ll see the chips fall where they may.”
Picayune Right Tackle Deonta Reed said, “I’m really excited for the game, considering what happened last year and how everything turned out. But it’s not like a hate thing but it’s like we’re ready.”
Picayune Defensive End/ Tackle Elijah Jenkins said, “Determination. Do our job and get what’s ours. Win two games to be a champion. You want to go down in history, win two games.”
A ticket to state will be punched with the two sides set to kick things off from West Jones at 7 p.m. Friday.
