World Spay Day highlights the importance of spaying and neutering pets

The month of February is recognized as Spay and Neuter Awareness Month, but today is World Spay Day, a day set aside to spread awareness about the importance of getting pets spayed.

Each year millions of pets are euthanized in the United States because there aren’t enough homes to go around. Having your pet spayed or neutered helps control the pet homelessness crisis.

Not only does it help with over population, it also helps prevent cancer, diseases, and curb wandering behaviors in animals. Humane Society of South MS Development Director Katie King said, “For every one pet that we adopt out into a loving home, we receive two in as either stray or abandoned pets. The only way that we are ever going to see any type of real relief is through spay and neuter. So, by spaying and neutering your pets, you are literally saving lives and keeping animal shelters from becoming overcrowded.”

HSSM offers spay and neutering for pets. To schedule an appointment call 228-863-3354.
