Woman shot and killed during violence on Capitol Hill

A woman who was shot inside the U.S. Capitol building has died.

Officials have not identified the woman who died, only saying she was believed to have been shot by a police officer.

The woman was rushed out of the U.S. Capitol as rioters stormed the building. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not known at this time.

Due to the violence, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew from 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Thursday for people inside Washington’s jurisdiction. “The behavior that we are witnessing is shameful, unpatriotic and above all, unlawful.  Anyone who has engaged in these activities, continues to engage in these activities will be held accountable. There will be law and order and this behavior will not be tolerated.”

Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee said, “Today’s events were not representation of peaceful protests. Today what we witnessed was unlawful, riotous behavior, and people that come to our city engaged in unlawful behavior will be held accountable.”
