Winter storm power outage update

Mississippi Power’s storm team of approximately 1,000 linemen, engineers, and support personnel began working at first light this morning to continue restoring power to customers impacted by the winter storm.

The storm team includes Mississippi Power employees and additional resources from Georgia Power and Alabama Power.

Power has been fully restored to customers in Hattiesburg, Heidelberg, and Forest. The company anticipates service will be fully restored to customers who can receive it by 6 p.m. today in Bay Springs, Decatur, Hickory, Newton, Taylorsville, and Union.

Mississippi Power’s crews normally handle mass power outages caused by hurricanes or wind events, so working in conditions like this is new. Power Delivery General Manager Randell Pinkston said, “The ice event is unusual for us, but we’ve had a little bit of practice at it off system and on system. Usually at a hurricane, the weather is warm, but after an ice storm the weather is still very difficult to work in afterwards.”

Mississippi Power expects to have power restored to 95 percent of customers who can receive power in Meridian, Lake, and Lawrence by midnight tonight.
