Waveland shares update to the Marriott Hotel
WAVELAND, Miss (WXXV)- Construction is officially underway on Waveland’s first hotel in more than 20 years, and it’s going vertical. The $16 million dual-brand Marriot Hotel, featuring Fairfield and TownePlace Suites, is rising along the city’s main business corridor. It’s being built on a four-acre site near the intersection of Highway 90 and the old Spanish Trail.
Mayor Trapani says the addition of the hotel will lead to more economic growth and development in the area
Trapani says, “what this is going to do, it’s going to bring people into Hancock County to stay when they are working at Stennis Space Center, Port Bienville, or Stennis Airport on a short term basis. Then if they get transferred in, the studies show that people like to move to where they’ve stayed. So, they’re more familiar with that area, so hopefully we get more growth, more houses built in this area once the hotel is up a few years.”
After some financial setbacks, Trapani says this project has been a long time coming for Hancock County.
“This is a joint effort of different entities in Hancock County. The Hancock County Board of Supervisors was involved in this project and so was the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission along with the city of Waveland. So, its three entities in Hancock County getting together and making a project like this possible.”
The hotel will be anchor for the west side of highway 90 in Hancock County.
Mayor Trapani says, “it’s going to be a huge impact on this western end of highway 90. We have a lot of development on the end of highway 90 and 603, but moving west towards Stennis Space Center we needed more businesses. We’ve already got a hibachi restaurant across the street that’s going to benefit a lot from the opening of the hotel. We have a burger place that has gone up on Kiln Waveland Cutoff Road and some other things in the works for all of highway 90.”
Mayor Trapani also says he hopes to have a ribbon cutting for the opening of the dual-brand Marriott hotel next summer.
