War Against Street Gangs

A declaration by District Attorney Tony Lawerence was prompted by the murder charges filed Monday in the death of Donovan Cowart who had been missing since 2013.
Today, Lawerence stood alongside law enforcement and the FBI to say enough is enough.
But they know it’s going to be an uphill battle. The suspect, Levi McCarty, was also charged with capital murder in a separate case in 2014, the year after Cowart went missing. But, the DA’s office was forced to drop those charges.
Officials say too often people will not testify in fear of retaliation. They say having a witness protection program would make a big difference in the way they’re able to prosecute cases.
Until a witness protection program is established, law enforcement will continue to ask for the community’s help in their war on gangs.
