Volunteer firefighter killed by driver in Lamar County, MS

Two volunteer firefighters were killed and a third injured in a hit and run accident in Lamar County Wednesday night.
Authorities say the victims were helping control traffic following a different accident when they were struck by a vehicle. The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment. That person’s condition is not known.
The county’s fire coordinator says this is the first time in his career that county firefighters were killed in the line of duty. Lamar County Fire Coordinator George Stevens said, “Serious loss for the fire department, the people in Sumrall and the county. Firefighters across the state called in with their condolences. I’ve already gotten word that the flags will be at half-mast at the National Firefighter Academy as the nation mourns the loss of these two firefighters.”
The suspect, 31-year-old Brandon Eaton of Sumrall, was found six miles from the accident scene and arrested. He’s charged with hit and run and causing death. He was expected to make his initial appearance in court this morning.
