VFW Post 5699 hosting service workshop supporting local veterans

Doing service never goes out of style. Saturday at VFW Post 5699 in Ocean Springs, the Gulf Coast District 1 VFW Auxiliary is hosting a crafts workshop from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Those who volunteer will be making masks, mats for the homeless, quilts, valentine’s favors, and learn how to knit.

All crafts made will go to the VA Biloxi and support veterans in need.

The goal is to teach do-it-yourself home crafts that benefit our local community. There will also be a representative from Quilts of Valor who cover service members and veterans touched by war, providing all with comfort and healing. VFW Auxiliary Hospital Ambassador for MS Ann Backhurst said, “The reason we’re doing it this way is because a lot of our members from our organizations are not able to come out to join in because they’re elderly or because of COVID concerns. So, this is a way we can do things together social distanced, wearing our masks that we can have a fellowship kind of like an old-fashioned quilting bee.”

The workshop event does require all volunteers to wear a mask and remain socially distant while making crafts.
