Veterans Father’s Day Wish for New Porch

He put his life on the line for his country, and now decades later, a local disabled veteran is hoping to get some help safe guarding his own home.
John Garcia served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He’s lived in Gulfport for the past four years. Now he and his wife are finding the front porch of their beloved home rotting away. Like his father, Garcia’s son is now out of town, serving in the military and his daughter is a teacher out of state. Garcia’s children are willing to pay for supplies to have the porch fixed, but they’re not able to do the work themselves this time. They’re hoping someone locally will pitch in to help. Something Mr. Garcia, who gets around in a scooter, would really appreciate: “It’s something that I can’t do and I don’t have a ton of money to call a construction company out to do it and I don’t have any idea how much it would cost. You can’t understand how much it would mean to have it fixed,” he said.
If you would like to offer any more or services to give back to Garcia as an early Father’s Day gift, you can contact his daughter, Jennifer at
