USM’s Matt Wallner named Freshman All-American
As a native of Forest Lake, Minnesota, Matt Wallner had a big decision to make before coming to Southern Miss. Either sign out of high school with his favorite team growing up, the Minnesota Twins, or head down south.
You could say the rest is history, even though he’s only got one season in the books. But that one season was worthy of Freshman All-American distinction, this time from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Wallner garners one of the 16 spots on the first team, having led the Golden Eagles with 19 home runs and posting a sub 2 ERA on the mound.
This is his third All American accolade.
