USM Researchers Examining Bonnet Carre Spillway’s Effects on Mississippi Sound

USM researchers are leading an investigation into the effects of the Bonnet Carre Spillway openings in our Mississippi Sound.

A team of USM researchers has begun a thorough examination of the spillway’s effects on the Mississippi Sound, and will continue their work for as long as the effects are measurable and impactful.

The mission: to advance the state’s scientific understanding and the public’s comprehensions of the actual effects of the spillways’ openings on the Mississippi Sound.

Leading this research are USM researchers from its School of Ocean Science and Engineering, located at the Marine Research Center in Gulfport, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, and the John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County.

University leaders say this research is a priority, and Governor Phil Bryant is praising the collaboration between academia and government, as both work to help the people of Mississippi and come up with scientific data and solutions to this ongoing issue.
