USM Gulf Park Celebrates Diversity

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus is celebrating diversity today, kicking off a week’s worth of activities on this topic.
The week-long event kicked off today with a Lunch and Learn, exploring issues facing the LGBTQ community. Other events throughout the week will highlight international students, race, cultural diversity and more.
Campus officials say they recognize the importance of valuing diversity and how it enhances the academic and social experiences on and off campus. Coordinator of Student Life and Career Services Jona Burton said, “Students on our campus really do experience diversity on a regular basis in their classroom in regards to age, in regards to people’s life experiences, as well as race and ethnicity and cultural background. So, we really want to focus on capturing all of our students and making sure that we’re spreading awareness and helping them to recognize their role in the conversation.”
Diversity Week will come to a close on Friday night with a performance called “The Telling Project,” which highlights veterans on the Coast.
