USA Today Names Ship Island Hidden Gem of Mississippi

What do you think Mississippi’s best kept secret is? According to USA Today, it’s Ship Island. The paper applauds the island for being a perfect getaway and people who got off the ferry at Ship Island Excursions this afternoon agree.
It may have been raining and gloomy when Jackie and Jason Shepherd got off the Ferry at the Gulfport Harbor this afternoon, but they say their time at Ship Island was very different. “The water was beautiful today,” said Jackie Shepherd, “The island was very clear, we saw lots of sting rays, dolphins playing everywhere and the blue crabs were starting to come in.”
Earlier this week, USA Today released a slideshow showcasing each state’s hidden gem and Ship Island was the secret treasure for the Magnolia State. Those who are responsible for taking visitors on the trip know the island best and say they’re not surprised. Captain Pete Skrmetta said, “Really nice boat ride, 45 minutes. They enjoy the boat ride, watching the dolphins. It’s a place to get away.”
People can swim, fish, tour the fort and just enjoy the serenity at Ship Island, but many say one of the most appealing factors is the water. “When you get out there, the water is a lot cleaner and clearer than you see of the Gulf beaches here. You know, it’s comparable to Florida water,” said Peter Skrmetta.
While the Shepherd’s plan to come to Ship Island often and agree it’s a hidden gem, they hope many others don’t catch on. “Yes, we think it’s true and don’t tell anybody about it. Let it stay hidden.”
Ship Island Excursions runs a ferry to the island regularly through November 1st.
