Urging support for Gulf Coast Rail Service
Mississippi U.S. Senator Roger Wicker is urging support for the Gulf Coast Passenger Rail Service.
On Thursday, Senator Wicker shared his support for the restoration of passenger rail services along the Gulf Coast in a letter sent to the chairman of the Surface Transportation Board.
The STB, which is an independent federal agency that oversees railroads, is currently considering a petition from Amtrak to restore service to the route between New Orleans and Mobile which runs through Mississippi that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
The letter Senator Wicker says, in part, “Amtrak, the freight railroads, and other stakeholders involved in Gulf Coast rail have already engaged in years of discussion. Unfortunately, the subsequent report, hearings, and studies have not yielded agreement.”
Several studies, including one recent study by USM, has turned up data showing the substantial overall economic benefits the entire Gulf Coast region would reap with the restoration of this service.
