Update on the road to sports betting on the Coast

Sunday marks the official day the sports betting regulations set by the Mississippi Gaming Commission go into effect.

Although this means casinos can now legally offer sports betting, Coast casinos don’t seem to be quite ready for the big day.

Construction is ongoing at the Golden Nugget’s Michael Patrick’s sports bar and grille in Biloxi. The area will soon offer more room, more TVs, more seating and sports betting.  Golden Nugget VP of Marketing and Resort Operations Scott King said, “You can walk up to a betting window and place a bet there, but we will also have kiosks where customers can go without any interaction with a staff member any time of the day and place a bet through a kiosk.”

King says in the future people will be able to bet through their mobile phones as long as they’re on the casino property. “It will be a seamless transition. Right now it’s really ‘let’s get the renovations done,’ ‘let’s get the final system approved’ and we’ll be ready in August.”

King says they’re not only working on the actual facility, but they’re also working on training the staff to provide top service. “Everything is happening at once. While at the same time as this construction is going on, we’ve hired our sports book leadership. It’s a whirlwind process, but it’s very calculated.”

As the internal preparations continue within each Coast casino there is still one step they must take before the fun begins. Allen Godfrey with the Mississippi Gaming Commission said,  “Technically the regulations are effective, but they need to gain permission before they can do it and that’s what they’re working on now.”

According to Godfrey, the Mississippi Gaming Commission must check the casino’s equipment before sports betting is made available to the public. He says they have not yet inspected any of the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos, but they plan to start doing so by next week. “As soon as they call us, we are on site.”
