U.S. Navy celebrates its 245th birthday
Today marks the U.S. Navy’s 245th birthday and sailors are reflecting on what the big day means to them.
The theme for this year’s birthday is ‘victory at sea,’ commemorating the 75th anniversary of the close of World War II.
At the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, in-person birthday celebrations have been put on hold this year due to COVID-19, but sailors are still taking the time to recognize the Navy’s long history and express hope about its future as well. Chief Rosalie Chang said, “We started in 1775 and continuing now to our 245th birthday, just the longevity of our service and you know how we are becoming more and more diverse as the years come and becoming more well-rounded altogether.”
Sailors are also remembering the 20th anniversary of the USS Cole bombing during this year’s birthday commemorations.
