Turtle Excluder Devices on Skimmer Trawls Discussion

NOAA Fisheries is proposing a change in the way shrimpers on the Coast tow in their catch in an effort to save more turtles. That could come at a price for local shrimpers.
Today at the Biloxi Visitors Center, NOAA Fisheries Representative Michael Barnette broke down the proposal to withdraw alternative tow time restrictions and require skimmer trawls to use turtle excluder devices.
A room of over 50 fishermen listened before some voiced their opinions on why this new proposal could be costly and add yet another regulation to an already declining industry.
If you weren’t able to make tonight’s public hearing you can still submit your comments online at www.regulations.gov.
