Turkey giveaway in Gulfport

United Healthcare Community Plan of Mississippi and Alcorn State University extension program distributed Thanksgiving turkeys and a full meal to people throughout the state through the Farm to Fork Program.
Mississippi ranked 50th in the nation for overall health and more than 35 percent of its adults are considered obese. Nearly one-third of all U.S. children are overweight and most will go on to become obese adults. The Farm to Fork Program combat this crisis on a local level.
Today, dozens of people lined up outside the Good Deeds Community Center in Gulfport to get their free turkey. Free turkey recipient Virgie Waller said, “We are going to get the free turkey and have a big Thanksgiving with our granny, our mom, and brother and the rest of our family.”
UHC Community Plan members were on hand to give people access to a full Thanksgiving dinner, recipes, and health tips.
