Tuberculosis Case Confirmed in Gautier High Student

A confirmed case of tuberculosis on the Gulf Coast has many Gautier High School parents concerned for the wellbeing of their children. Classes at Gautier High School start Wednesday, but many parents fear a TB epidemic could be waiting for their children.

The Pascagoula School District and the Mississippi State Department of Health (M.S.D.H.) held a meeting Tuesday evening in Gautier to try to put some of these fears to rest. After a quick lesson about tuberculosis, Dr. Paul Byers, Deputy State Epidemiologist with M.S.D.H., opened the floor for questions from the parents, taking the time to answer each one to put parents’ minds at ease.

Dr. Byers says, "We feel like the risk to the students and teachers is minimal at this point, but very appropriate of us to do our contact investigation. This is part of what we do at the health department, around a case of TB, is identify those individuals who may have been exposed and do appropriate testing to verify if they have been affected as a result of their exposure.”

The superintendent of the Pascagoula School District says that all students who require testing will know by Wednesday.
