Tobacco free campus coming to USM

Soon the smell of cigarette smoke will be a thing of the past on USM campuses.
Starting January 1st, 2018, all USM locations will be tobacco free. This new policy began as a student-led initiative where students voted for a one hundred percent tobacco free university. A twenty thousand dollar grant from CVS Health Foundation and the American Cancer Society will be used to help raise awareness of the new policy.
There are currently designated areas to smoke on the Gulf Park campus and some students tell News 25 they think the tobacco ban is nice, but aren’t concerned with people smoking. USM student Reignbow said, “Well, I’m not a smoker and I really don’t care who smokes. People can do whatever they want. I think that, you know, if they take it away that’s fine and if they keep it that’s fine. I don’t think it’s going to bother many people if they do or if they don’t.”
Those with USM tell News 25 the responsibility for the enforcement of the new policy rests with all members of the university.
