The Golden Years

Today is national grandparent’s day but a local nonprofit and hundreds of volunteers got a jump start on this day designated to honor our seniors. Volunteers from South Mississippi were out in full force at nursing homes and senior care facilities in our state’s 6 southern most counties yesterday visiting with residents. This is the third year adopt a grandparent has been held in South Mississippi. Card tricks, finger painting and good old fashioned one on one conversation were among the day’s activities. This year’s event was one especially close to founder Kathy Rogers’s heart. Kathy Rogers, adopt a Grandparent Day founder president: “I lost my mother on June 28th this year. She had lived with me for 5 years. She had had multiple strokes and she fell, so this is something that I want to do to honor her. Adopt a Grandparent volunteers, visited 32 nursing homes this year.
