The Blessing of the Fleet Celebrations Begin with Memorial Mass

The Blessing of the Fleet celebrations began tonight in Biloxi to honor our fishing history here on the Gulf Coast.
The weekend events coincide with the beginning of shrimp season. St. Michael’s Catholic Church, known as the Church of Fishermen, held a memorial Mass for deceased fishermen. Father Greg read the names of all the men and women on the coast who made their living on the water and have now passed.
This mass is always well attended and offers an opportunity for family and friends to remember their loved ones. Father Gregory Barras said, “Tonight begins the four day celebration of the Church of the Fishermen. Women and men, for well over a century, who have made their livelihood from the Gulf of Mexico, as well as building a faith community that we call St. Michaels. So, the two go hand in hand.”
Tomorrow, the DMR will host a “Great American Seafood Cook Off” at the Slavonian Lodge. The annual Shrimp King and Queen will be crowned Saturday and the final Blessing of the Fleet will occur Sunday.
