Thanksgiving Dinner at American Legion in Bay St. Louis
Thanksgiving can be hard for those not able to cook their own dinner but it can be harder for those that are home bound and not able to go to one. That’s where the volunteers at the American Legion Hall in Bay St. Louis step in.
Yesterday, volunteers prepared, cooked and boxed up Thanksgiving dinners for well over 100 home bound residents. They didn’t stop there. Organizers say they usually serve between 800-900 plates at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner.
In it’s 30th year, the event brings out volunteers young and old. Volunteer Nicholas Clogher said, “I just like helping people that aren’t privileged enough to have a Thanksgiving, just spreading the Thanksgiving.”
Thanksgiving Dinner organizer Sally Kelly said, “I go out and, call it begging, ask the different businesses for donations and they do. I put it all together and have the dinner. So really, when you’re eating here it’s the businesses giving back to you. Some of the casinos donate and other businesses donate, so it makes it nice.”
Kelly has been organizing and volunteering at the event since it started 30 years ago.
