Texting & Driving Bill Goes Into Effect July 1st

As of July 1st, texting and driving will officially be illegal in the State of Mississippi.

Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill banning texting and posting to social media while driving. Those caught will face a civil fine of $25 per violation. Starting in 2016, that fine will increase to $100. Local law enforcement officials are in favor of the bill’s passage.

Sgt. Jackie Rhodes, Biloxi Police Public Information Officer, says, “It means that our accident rates should go down. Historically, texting and driving, or we just call it distracted driving, has been on the increase and caused a lot more accidents lately than it has in the past.”

Biloxi Police tell News 25 that as a department, they believe this law will save lives.
