Teams prepare for Conference USA Tournament this week

People from all across the country will be watching their favorite college teams compete here in Biloxi this week. News 25’s Kristen Anzuini gives us a look at how this tournament will affect our local businesses.

Eight college baseball teams from across the country are here on the coast this week for the Conference USA Tournament.  The action gets underway Wednesday morning at 9:00 at MGM Park in Biloxi.

Western Kentucky University Head Baseball Coach John Pawlowski says, “It is an excitement, it is a post season play for us, you know our season has every weekend you play 30 conference games it is a challenge the reward is to go to post season, this is one of the rewards for this team for this group to have the opportunity to go and fight for a conference championship here in Biloxi.”

Sunday afternoon the Conference USA Champion will receive the leagues automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division One baseball tournament.

Ray Zuberer says, “I mean it is awesome, we have been talking about this ever since I was a freshman, we got  here, we didn’t make it the first two years I was here and it is awesome to make it and compete in this amazing tournament.”

And this tournament is expected to be a home run for businesses, the economic impact it will have is expected to be 4-6 million dollars.

Media Coordinator of Overtime Sports Mac McAfee says, “They book 1400 rooms up front before the players even come, these are just the players they are not their families and not the fans.”

And of course, when you come to the coast… You have to enjoy all of the things it has to offer, and that’s just what many of the players have done.

“We actually went to the casinos last night, and just had a ball there, and the hotel we are staying in we have an arcade there, so i was there pretty much the whole time,” says Zuberer.

If you would like to see the teams in action, the games will take place at MGM Park from Wednesday thru Sunday. There are four games on the schedule for Wednesday.
