Tax Free Weekend begins Friday

If you haven’t already begun your back to school shopping this weekend is the perfect time to start.

Starting Friday at midnight, Mississippi shoppers will not be charged the seven percent sales tax on clothes or shoes that ring up under $100. The Gulfport Premium Outlets Director of Marketing tells News 25 they expect the parking lot to be packed as shoppers take advantage of the extra savings this weekend.

They’ll even have extended hours in anticipation of the larger than usual crowds. Rhonda Roberts with the Gulfport Premium Outlets said, “You have the regular prices, 25 to 65 percent off, but then they’re running the back to school sales. In addition to that, they’re going to save seven percent. Also for us, they can go to the website, download coupons and use that in addition to all the other savings. If you’re shopping for one, two, or three kids, I mean, that’s major savings.”

Mississippi’s Tax Free Weekend ends at midnight Saturday. For a list of eligible items and guidelines for the Tax Free Weekend go to the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s website.
