A Taste of Home for Service Members

Dozens of men and women serving our country aren’t able to spend the holidays with their families. An annual tradition at the Seabee Base in Gulfport aims to help military personnel feel closer to home by providing them with a nice warm holiday meal.
The Liberty Center, a hall on the base for those in the military with family out of state, was full of home-cooked food and holiday cards donated by the community on Christmas morning.
Aaron Burguss, a service member on base, tells News 25 this weekend was his first Christmas away from his family. He said, “It does make me miss them more than usual because the more I think about it the more I realize I’m missing out on the home-cooked meals and the unwrapping of presents and just waking up in the morning to see the lit up tree with all these cool ornaments. It’s a shift, but since my dad’s in the Navy and I’ve lived on a naval base before I also feel comfortable here.”
This was the fourth annual Taste of Home held on the base.
