Talking to children about COVID-19

The new normal for daily life has changed for everyone including kids whose daily routines have been disrupted.

As public conversations around COVID-19 continues to increase, children may worry about themselves, their family, and their friends getting ill.

Parents play an important role in helping children understand what’s going on and teaching them to help stop the spread of the virus. It’s important that adults provide information that is honest and accurate. Canopy Children’s Solutions CEO Dr. John Damon said, “I think we need to help educate them that they can have a risk and while you want to get together with your friends and have fun and that you love your friends, but one way to love your friends is to protect them. So, I think there are a lot of those myths that kids are passing around that fuels this idea that somehow they are immune to this virus.”

Dr. Damon also recommends talking to your children about the COVID-19 stories they see online and social media and explain some stories may be based on rumors and inaccurate information.
