Sweet Belongings store holds grand opening in D’Iberville

Sweet Belongings opened its doors in D’Iberville today. What’s even sweeter than the name is that 100 percent of the store’s proceeds go toward fighting the war on human trafficking.

The new up-scale boutique store is brought to you by Advocates for Freedom, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Their ribbon cutting ceremony was at 3 p.m. today and guests included the mayors of D’Iberville and Ocean Springs.

All of the items are donated and so far, the organization has helped 279 women and helped to change laws in Mississippi regarding human trafficking. Advocates for Freedom CEO Susie Harvill said, “This goes to help our victims of human trafficking, not to administration costs. People want to help anyway they can, but they get really excited when they feel like they did something to stop human trafficking.”

Advocates for Freedom Board Member Geraldine Overstreet said, “We’ve not been able to do fundraisers. COVID put a stop to everything, but we’re coming back and with Sweet Belongings there’s so many good things.”

Advocates for Freedom is planning on using the proceeds to build a shelter and home for human trafficking victims.

They anticipate they’ll have a shelter in two to three months and a home by next summer.
