Suspect in Jackson County shooting turns himself in

A suspect in a shooting case at a Forts Lake home in Jackson County turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning.

Sheriff Mike Ezell said the shooting happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday after two man began fighting over a woman. The argument then escalated and one of the men was shot.

When deputies arrived, Ezell said, one of the men was on the floor with a gunshot wound. The suspect was trying to help him, but fled when deputies arrived.

The victim was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile, Ezell said. There was no word on his condition.

Deputies began looking for the suspect, who decided to turn himself in.

After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office and the Public Defender, the suspect is not charged at this time, is not being identified, and was released from custody.

However, the case will be presented to a grand jury for consideration of an indictment.
