Summer Institute Arts Integration
Teachers along the Gulf Coast are learning ways to incorporate art into the classroom at the Whole Schools Initiative Summer Institute at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
Whole Schools Initiative is a program of the Mississippi Arts Commission and is the first statewide education program. Teachers are encouraged to use art as a teaching tool for students to help with learning.
Different sessions include dancing, painting, storytelling, and creating songs.
Over 250 educators are attending this weeklong event of professional development. Mississippi Arts Commission Arts and Education Director Charlotte Smelser said, “We have music. We have drumming. Any art form they are all included. Teachers are learning to use those. First, they are learning the strategies and skills of the art form itself then they are learning how to embed that in their instructional lessons in the classroom.”
The Summer Institute goes beyond taking art for granted and hopes educators will share their success stories once the next school year starts.
