Student Athlete of the Week: Chase Shears- Poplarville Hornets

The weekly stat lines of our News 25 Student Athlete of the Week are hard to comprehend. Poplarville running back Chase Shears has only 63 carries on the season, but 19 of those have gone for touchdowns.

The standout junior was in rare form once again on Friday, leading his Hornets back to the 4A state title game for the second time in three years.

With Poplarville going up against an East Central brick wall that came into Friday’s South State final giving up less than nine points per game, early offense was gonna come at a premium. That is until Shears touched the ball just three times in the first half, but that was more than enough for the Hornet Bowl MVP.

He took his two carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns with his lone reception going for a 40 yard house call.

Shears was at a doctor’s appointment during Tuesday’s practice, but Head Coach Jay Beech is more than happy to brag on his behalf. “About 50 percent of the time he touches it he does score, if you look at his stats. The other night he touched it six times and scored three. So yeah, that’s a pretty remarkable stat. And he’s a good player, and he can do things with the ball that most kids can’t. And he’s a humble kid and he’s a hard-working kid and he gives credit to his offensive line all the time and the players. He’s a great teammate and you could easily gain resentment towards a kid getting all this recognition, but he’s such a great teammate and we’re glad he’s on our team.”

Overall, Shears has more than 1,200 yards on the season, averaging more than 19 yards per carry.
