Stolen school bus batteries at St. Martin High

Dozens of St. Martin High School buses were out of service this morning after a weekend theft of bus batteries.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says 66 batteries were stolen from 33 buses over the weekend.  A white 2001 Ram 1500 Jackson County School District maintenance truck was also taken from the school barn on Eglin Road, along with a 14-16 foot trailer stolen from the high school.

Parents were notified to expect delays with pickups and supervisors began making adjustments to their scheduled routes.

Jackson County School District Superintendent Dr. Barry Amacker says the investigation into the incident is underway. “We’re doing our own investigation as a school to see what we can find out. Also, the sheriff’s department is already all over it. It’s just one of those things everybody has to step up and do the best they can, but I believe everyone made the best of it.”

Dr. Amacker says they expect new batteries to be in place and ready to go this afternoon.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 228-769-3063.
