STEM Day for female students at Naval Construction Battalion Center

Over 50 female students from Gulfport and Long Beach High School spent the day at the Seabee Base. Their focus was learning about different career paths in the STEM fields.
The students broke up into small groups and spoke with different Seabees about science, technology, engineering, and math careers in the Navy.
Captain Cheryl Hansen tells News 25 it is important to get our youth involved in STEM fields, especially young women. “Statistics still show that young women are just not seeming to come into these types of career fields. I think it’s important we have a great opportunity here at CBC Gulfport where we have such nontraditional career fields, all of them STEM related for the most part, that we can expose these young women to.”
Students participated in hands on demonstrations with public works, the construction training school, and the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Professional Development Center.
