Steak and Stake with the Heavyweight

Tonight some heavyweight star power was at the IP Casino in Biloxi for the Boys and Girls Club’s annual Steak and Stake event. News 25’s Hank Davis had the chance to go toe to toe with the champ.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast hosted their 25th annual Steak and Stake event. Former Club Youth of the Year Kewanna Riley says it’s come a long way since she attended as a young girl. “It really is a dynamic event. These club kids will remember what it was like for the rest of their lives.”
As local business leaders and young people from across the Coast mingled, Shyah Dickerson with the Boys and Girls Club of America told News 25 what it was like seeing Evander Holyfield coming to the Coast and interacting with local kids. “It was amazing. It’s always amazing. The kids light up. They want to hear what he’s saying and what he’s telling them is Evander grew up in Boys and Girls Club. He first attended when he was six-years-old and he first picked up boxing gloves at the Boys and Girls Club.”
The IP’s ballroom was packed with supporters tonight, business and community leaders seated next to young boys and girls that hope to one day fill their shoes.
And of course, the champ had a big crowd to address when he arrived, but his message was aimed at the little ears. “Me personally, I was the youngest of nine. We didn’t have much. The Boys and Girls Club gave me the opportunity to be the person I am today.”
Holyfield hopes that by the end of the night, everyone in the room realizes just how important the Boys and Girls Club can be to the youth in our community. “What I got from the program, I got a lot of information that kept me on this narrow path that leads to what people call success,” said Holyfield.
