Staying safe while online dating
For today’s Wanted Wednesday, we’re taking you back to the Ocean Springs sexual assault case. The female victim told authorities she and the suspect, Manuel Alvelo, met on a social media site. According to statisticbrain.com, over 54 million people have tried online dating.
Now for this woman, the results were terrible. Alvelo allegedly molested her.
Today, News 25’s Shelby Myers sat down with Ocean Springs Captain William Jackson. He told News 25 the two met online through a dating site called Whisper. Captain Jackson said to be extremely careful on social media sites because you never know who you’re going to meet.
Some target people just to lure them in and do harmful things. “If you’re going to meet up with someone you’re not familiar with and don’t really know that well, I would suggest you meet somewhere that’s a crowded area. Make sure you bring a friend with you and always, always let someone know where you are at all times,” said Captain Jackson.
Captain Jackson says the victim in this case was lucky enough to get away and even smart enough to look for the suspect’s tag number.
If you or anyone you know has been sexually attacked, don’t be afraid to speak out. You can report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
