A Moss Point man convicted of sexual battery against a minor, was denied a new trial by the state Supreme Court.

Jimmy David Williams was convicted at trial of the March 2018 assault on a then-ninth grade student. He was sentenced in January 19, 2023, to serve 30 years day-for-day. He appealed the decision, asking for a new trial.

According to testimony at trial, Williams approached the student while she was en route to school, forced her into his vehicle at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her before dropping her off at school.

Williams appealed, asking for a new trial, saying the conviction was against the overwhelming weight of evidence due to conflicting testimony.

The state Supreme Court said in its decision that the trial court did not abuse its discretion by denying a motion for a new trial and upheld the conviction and sentence.
