Standoff in Pass Christian ends safely

One man is now in custody after barricading himself and his estranged wife in a house in Pass Christian today.

Around 8:30 this morning, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to 911 calls. What began as a domestic disturbance call quickly escalated into a hostage situation and an armed standoff.

Fifty-three year-old Hiram Smith allegedly forced his way into his wife’s home with a firearm and refused to let her leave. After about an hour of negotiations, Smith let his wife go, but he wouldn’t leave and began making suicidal threats.

Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson authorized the mobilization of the Harrison County and Gulfport Police Department SWAT teams.

At about 3:15, Smith was removed from the home unarmed and safely detained. Sheriff Peterson says he’s happy to have a safe end to today’s incident. “AMR is going to take him for a mental evaluation and go from there. Hopefully we will have charges on him, just not at this time. It will be later on. Right now, the only thing we’re worried about is his mental health. Once the hospital evaluates him, I’m sure the Department of Mental Health will come in and evaluate him and we’ll go from there.”

Harrison County Sheriff’s Office has obtained felony warrants for Smith’s arrest. Once Smith is released from the hospital he will be taken into custody and formally charged.
