St. Alphonsus teacher’s birthday celebration
Today was a very special day in Ocean Springs at St. Alphonsus Catholic School. Teacher Ms. Loraine Schneider turned 86-years-old. Her students took the time today to wish her a happy birthday.
It was only fitting that Ms. Loraine Schneider’s 86th birthday takes place during Catholic Schools Week, considering she’s been teaching at St. Alphonsus for 42 years and teaching overall for 64 years. “It makes me feel happy.”
After all these years, there’s only one reason Ms. Schneider continues to teach. “It’s the children. To see how much you can do for them, they need so much today, that’s why I love to come back to them. They are very good students.”
Catholic Schools Week shows appreciation for how the church teaches religion as well as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Principal Pam Rogers knows her seasoned educator gets the job done as a math teacher and a religion coordinator. She is also a tutor. “Ms. Loraine is the touchstone of our school. She has a great love for the Lord and wants to bring that to every child’s heart.”
Ms. Schneider is genuinely loved at St. Alphonsus. As she received hugs and gifts from different students, it reminded her exactly why she started teaching in the first place. “They help me grow. As they grow, I’m growing. I see so much in so many children going on to make a good life for themselves.”
Experience and love are two things that Ms. Schneider brings everyday to school. Just ask Deacon Jim Gunkel, who has known her for nearly thirty years, teaching all of his children. “These children really come to her. She’s very affectionate to them and very loving. They develop this relationship.”
“She knows what she’s doing. Every child matters to her and they know they are important to her,” said Rogers.
A very happy birthday to Ms. Schneider.
