Spotlight on USM alumni: McDowell and Mims inducted into Hall of Fame

He isn’t billed as a lead actor, but much credit is due to former USM faculty member and film school director Dr. Dixon McDowell, who will be honored alongside fellow filmmaker Steve Mims, at USM’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Long Beach.
The university’s department of mass communication and journalism honored both alumni for their success, achievements, and mentoring in the film industry.
Among these accomplishments are equipping hundreds of people for careers in the filmmaking industry from cast to crew members of major motion pictures such as “Precious Cargo” and “Southern Fury.”
Dr. McDowell headed up USM’s film program on the Coast, wrote and produced a number of his own award winning screenplays and also served as the chair of USM’s radio, TV and film department in Hattiesburg.
Steve Mims is an award winning producer and director who has also earned national praise.
