Spirit of Jackie Robinson Awards

Eight community leaders were presented with the Spirit of Jackie Robinson Award this afternoon.

This is all part of the Biloxi NAACP’s second annual Spirit of Jackie Robinson Program and Performance. This year’s theme is “Jackie Robinson matters still today.”

NAACP representatives tell News 25 these eight community heroes not only make an impact in our overall community but have done so while exercising many of the qualities and values executed by Jackie Robinson towards his hard fought road to integrating Major League Baseball in the late 1940s. Spirit of Jackie Robinson program organizer Gordon Jackson said, “Jackie Robinson achieved his accomplishments like breaking the color line 69 years ago. The way he did, the obstacles he had to overcome, those obstacles are still relevant today. We still have issues to where we have to overcome things to diversify our community.”

Members of the Biloxi Boys and Girls Club and the Biloxi NAACP Youth Council performed a reading at the ceremony today.
