Special Session Addressing Budget Comes to a Close

Contention in the Mississippi House special legislative session has come to a close.

One day after the Senate, the Mississippi House agreed to a plan to fill deficits in the final days of the budget year.

The bill gives Gov. Phil Bryant permission to take as much as needed from rainy day fund to balance the $6 billion budget.

House appropriations chair, Rep. Herb Frierson, estimates it should be around 60 million dollars or less.

State tax collections have fallen short of expectations since the budget year started last July.

Bryant has already made two rounds of spending cuts and has pulled $45 million from the rainy day fund.

The budget year ends tonight at midnight.
