Southern Miss vs. Mississippi State baseball preview
In state college baseball rivalries mean more, they just do, especially in the Magnolia State where the big three schools of Southern Miss, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss combine for the largest big three attendance numbers in the entire country.
This weekend that fan support will be on full display for USM’s first trip to Starkville since 2009. There’s some extra juice for that three-game series with the Golden Eagles having swept the Bulldogs in Hattiesburg to open up the 2018 season.
Consider that payback for MSU knocking Southern Miss out of its own regional in 2017 with back-to-back victories in the championship.
It’s hard to downplay the significance of this series for two ranked teams and yet USM Head Coach Scott Berry is playing it cool after sweeping Purdue. “Nothing different. I know you guys are going to try to make it out to be more than what it is and the fans will too, I understand that. But you know what, the bottom line is we’re trying to play the game of baseball and win a game of baseball and you have to have an opponent. Doesn’t matter who the opponent is, if it’s Mississippi State or if it’s Rolling Fork. I mean I don’t know. The bottom line is you understand how to play the game of baseball and to win that game with the rules that are set within it, so that’s what we’re going to do. I’m not, I’m sure they may a little bit. But it’ll be my job to keep us as focused as we can.”
Southern Miss and Mississippi State will lead off their three-game series at 4 p.m. Friday from Dudy Noble in Starkville.
