Southern Miss still alive in title race despite WKU loss

Now as it pertains to Jack Abraham, the Conerly Trophy nominee left the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Western Kentucky with an apparent injury to his left leg, leaving his status for the Florida Atlantic game up in the air.

Long before his eventual exit, Abraham threw his lone touchdown pass of the day to the former Biloxi Indian Tim Jones, who has now found the end zone three weeks in a row after going scoreless the first eight games of the season.

But in the end, that wasn’t enough to overcome a costly catch and fumble from Quez Watkins who had the ball punched out on a near second quarter touchdown, leading to a 14 point swing in what turned out to be a 28-10 loss for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss Head Coach Jay Hopson said, “It’s a 14-point swing, and pretty much that was the score of the game until the sack at the very end of the game. But we drove down a couple times. I felt like at times we had put a few drives together, we just didn’t score.”

Despite the Senior Day loss, Southern Miss still gets to the conference championship game under three scenarios. One, USM beats FAU and Louisiana Tech loses to UTSA, two USM, LA Tech, and UAB all win, giving the Golden Eagles a three way tie-breaker, and three USM, LA Tech, and UAB all lose, resulting in the like.
