Southern Miss quarterback battle

From the onset of fall camp, Southern Miss Head Coach Jay Hopson has been looking for the next in line at the quarterback position. That battle has raged on in recent weeks and there’s still no clear cut winner to take the starting job.
Keon Howard and Kwadra Griggs have both shown flashes throughout the race, enough so to make Coach Hop’s job that much more of a coin flip. No one said replacing four year starter Nick Mullens was gonna be easy, but the good news is both players appear to be viable options under center.
USM’s home opener versus Kentucky is now less than two weeks away, but Hopson says there’s no pressure to anoint the next first string QB prior to September 2nd. “You know you always like to, you hope one guys is so gang-busters the other guy he just separates, but if they both are playing well and deserve to play I think it’s always good to have two guys. I’m not that guy that oh, you’ve got to have one guy. If we have two quarterbacks that deserve to play, we need to play them. It’s certainly one thing it does give you a little bit if one guy is hot, he can keep playing.”
On Saturday, true freshmen Marcelo Rodriguez threw his name in the ring with five touchdown passes to just one interception at USM’s second scrimmage of fall camp.
