Southern Miss quarterback battle update

When Southern Miss fall camp opened up back in July, the big headline was the quarterback battle. Now with less than 72 hours left until the season opener, that’s still the big story at USM: Keon Howard or Kwadra Griggs.
At Monday’s weekly press conference, Head Coach Jay Hopson said they would both get to play, but who is going to get the first rep versus Kentucky is still a mystery. Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson says they’re more similar than they are different which doesn’t make the decision any easier.
It’s safe to say this thing is going down to the wire which is buying Coach Hopson just a little bit more time. “I think that’s only fair to Kwadra cause he did have a little injury there midweek, so we’re going to let these guys battle it out, and it’ll probably be, to be honest with you, Friday or Saturday. We’ll play it up to game time, but I think that’s the fair thing to do.”
Dawson said, “We’re going to see how the game goes, you know what I mean? I think that I’m not going to sit here and make any statements about we’re playing two, we’re playing three or whatnot. But we’re going to try to do what it takes to win the game, move the football.”
Protecting the football will be another point of emphasis for whoever is in the game with Nick Mullens having thrown three first half interceptions against the Wildcats in 2016.
