Southern Miss gives up record score to Tulane

Back in 2014, Southern Miss jumped out to a 14 nothing lead against Marshall only to end up losing 63-17.

On Saturday, Southern Miss jumped out to a 14 nothing lead against Tulane, only to end up losing 66-24.

A new record for points allowed inside M.M. Roberts Stadium as the Golden Eagles now fall to 0-3 this season.

Even after giving up that two touchdown lead, USM was only trailing 31-21 at the break before getting outscored 35-3 in the second half.

The difference was in the ground game as the Black and Gold gave up 430 yards rushing, compared to just 70 of their own. Head Coach Scotty Walden said, “There’s nothing to be happy about from this one, and they locked in and they heard the message and the message is that hey, we’ve got to be real about these mistakes that we’re making. It started out with real frank conversations with the coaching staff which led to a real frank conversation with the football team and we were just very transparent about where we’re at and very transparent about what is acceptable at Southern Miss. And the product that we put on the field Saturday was unacceptable. And the kids know that and the coaches know that and going forward, I think we’re going to be better for it.”

Southern Miss will go for its first win of the season at North Texas at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
