Southern Miss Football: Spring Practice Day 2
Coming off the most controversial offseason of the Jay Hopson era, a lot of the recent conversation about Southern Miss football program hasn’t really been about football.
But with spring practice officially underway, all the talk is back to x’s and o’s.
Today was USM’s second of 14 sessions, comprised of 12 practices and two scrimmages including a spring game. The Golden Eagles are coming off their third straight winning season under Coach Hopson and their fourth overall, but failed to make a bowl game in 2018 with an overall mark of 6-5.
That’s why the main message at the start of spring ball is one of insecurity when it comes to the depth chart. Head Coach Jay Hopson said, “All of this, certainly it will take a little time there. But certainly those guys are picking it up. I think Jack and Tate are doing really well. I thought the receivers and running backs are all doing well. We’ve got competition across the board so that’s what spring is for. We’re going to find out who the starters are, and it’s going to be fun to watch.”
Those position battles include one at quarterback despite incumbent starter Jack Abraham leading the nation in completion percentage last season.
The Black and Gold will get back to work on Saturday for an early morning practice.
